.IT is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Italy.
2) Who can register for a .it domain name and what are the special registration requirements/restrictions for .it domain name?
Special requirements/restrictions for a .it domain name are as below:
a) Domain registrant must have local presence within Euro member states; Only individual and juridical persons residing in or belonging to a Euro member states are allowed to register the .it domain.
b) There are 2 types of .it domain registration which are company/corporation and individual, please refer to below table for the required details

c) In order to register a .it domain name, registrant must agree on the following registration terms and conditions.
i. The Registrant of the domain name in question, declares under their own responsibility that they are:
- in possession of the citizenship or resident in a country belonging to the European Union (in the case of registration for natural persons);
- established in a country belonging to the European Union (in the case of registration for other organizations);
- aware and accept that the registration and management of a domain name is subject to the "Rules of assignment and management of domain names in ccTLD. it" and "Regulations for the resolution of disputes in the ccTLD.it" and their subsequent amendments;
- entitled to the use and/or legal availability of the domain name applied for, and that they do not prejudice, with the request for registration, the rights of others;
- aware that for the inclusion of personal data in the Database of assigned domain names, and their possible dissemination and accessibility via the Internet, consent must be given. See "The policy of the .it Registry in the Whois Database" on the website of the Registry;
- aware and agree that in the case of erroneous or false declarations in this request, the Registry shall immediately revoke the domain name, or proceed with other legal actions. In such case the revocation shall not in any way give rise to claims against the Registry;
- release the Registry from any liability resulting from the assignment and use of the domain name by the natural person that has made the request;
- accept Italian jurisdiction and laws of the Italian State.
ii. The interested party, after reading the above disclosure, gives consent to the processing of information required for registration, as defined in the above disclosure. Giving consent is optional, but if no consent is given, it will not be possible to finalize the registration, assignment and management of the domain name.
iii. The interested party, after reading the above disclosure, gives consent to the dissemination and accessibility via the Internet, as defined in the disclosure above. Giving consent is optional, but absence of consent does not allow the dissemination and accessibility of Internet data.
iv. For explicit acceptance, the interested party declares that they:
- are aware and agree that the registration and management of a domain name is subject to the "Rules of assignment and management of domain names in ccTLD.it" and "Regulations for the resolution of disputes in the ccTLD.it "and their subsequent amendments;
- are aware and agree that in the case of erroneous or false declarations in this request, the Registry shall immediately revoke the domain name, or proceed with other legal actions. In such case the revocation shall not in any way give rise to claims against the Registry;
- release the Registry from any liability resulting from the assignment and use of the domain name by the natural person that has made the request;
- accept the Italian jurisdiction and laws of the Italian State.
e) The DNS for a .IT domain must be able to create a DNS zone that containing at least SOA, NS and A records.
d) Nameservers for an .IT domain have to be correctly configured before the actual registration. The registry checks the Nameservers for a period of 30 days, else the registration will fail and the domain will be deleted by the registry without prior warning, and no refund will be provided. Please ensure that the following requirements are met:
- The master server stated in the SOA of the zone must be one of the nameservers given with the domain application.
- Each nameserver stated in the application must have a valid NS entry.

3) What is the length for .it domain name?
Minimum of 3 / maximum of 63 characters allowed.
4) What is the term of registration?
The term of registration is 1 year.
5) How do I perform a .it domain registration?
Partners may register the domain name through Quick Start Registration function. Partner may refer to “Domain Registration” FAQ for more information.
6) Can I delete a domain after registered?
Yes, partners are allowed to delete a .it domain name after registered, however, registration fee is not refundable.
7) What is the term of renewal?
The term of renewal is 1 year.
8) What is the renewal grace period for .it domain name and how do I perform a domain renewal?
There is 40 renewal grace period for .it domain name. As the .it domain renewal is a manual process and it required 3 – 5 business days to process, therefore, partners are advised to submit the renewal request 5 days before the end of the renewal grace period. Partner may refer to “Domain Renewal” FAQ for more information.
9) Any Redemption Grace Period (RGP) for .it domain name?
No, there is no RGP for .it domain. Partner may refer to “Domain Restoration” FAQ for more information.
10) How long does it takes for a domain to release to public registration after expired and not renew?
After a .it domain was expired, it will go through below life cycle:-
40 days renewal grace period -- > No Redemption grace period --> No pending delete
If partners did not renew or restore the domain name, it will be release for public re-registration after 40 days from expiration date. Please note that domain re-registration is on first-come, first-served basis.
11) Can I initiate a registrar transfer for .it domain name and how do I initiate the transfer?
No, due to registrar transfer function for .it has yet launch. We will notify partners once this function is ready. Partner may refer to “Registrar Transfer” FAQ for more information.
12) Can I initiate a reseller transfer for .it domain name and how do I initiate the transfer?
Yes, partners are allowed to initiate reseller transfer for .it domain name. Please note that domain will be extended for 1 year after completion. Partner may refer to “Reseller Transfer” FAQ for more information.
13) How do I manage my .it domain name?
Partners may manage domain name through User Management function. Partner may refer to “Domain Management” FAQ for more information.
14) Can I change registrant name for .it domain name?
Yes, partners are allowed to change registrant name for .it domain name through Partner Central. However, the new registrant must meet the registration requirements as mentioned in Q2.
Registry reserve the right to suspend/delete a domain name which does not fulfill the registration requirements.
15) Does WebNIC provide Internationalized Domain name (IDN) for .it?
No, WebNIC does not provide IDN.it domain name at this moment.
