1)What is .LK?
.LK is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Sri Lanka.
2) Who can register for a .LK domain name and what are the special registration requirements / restrictions for .LK domain name?
.LK domain is generally offered for organization, any organization from any country may register for .LK domain. WebNIC currently offer .LK, .COM.LK, ORG.LK and .EDU.LK.
The domain administration contact must be the employee or authorize personnel of the registrant company. Registrant company name, first name and last name are unable to modify upon successful registration of a .LK domain. The DNS needs to be pre-configured before registering the .LK domain.
Individual may register .LK domain with purpose similar to the following:
- Professionals
- Artistes
- Political Candidates – Letter signed by the candidate should be submitted
The .LK registration is a manual process and it requires approximately 1-3 working days to complete. We shall notify you on the registration status via email.
3) Can I register any name I want?
Domains which fall under below circumstances are not allowed to register:
- The name Sri Lanka in any form (but, anything preceding Lanka and following Lanka will be allowed. i.e. ABClanka.lk, lankaABC.lk)
- Top level domains (eg. com.lk, co.lk, org.lk, or.lk, net.lk, ne.lk, etc.) and proposed new Global Top Level Domains.
- Towns, provinces and abbreviations thereof. (eg. colombo.lk, kandy.lk, western.lk, cmb.lk, etc.).
- Names that maybe offensive, obscene, or grossly misleading to any accepted religion, race, culture or tradition of Sri Lanka.
- Generic names. Some names considered generic are:
- Professions (eg. lawyer.lk, doctor.lk, etc.)
- Internet Services (eg. internet.lk, mail.lk, www.lk, ftp.lk, etc.)
- Other generic terms.
Generic names domains are not allowed to be registered under .lk, but may be registered under open second levels or to organizations, or associations which represent the relevant industry as a whole. However, any generic name starts with “e” or “e-“could be accepted. Eg: e’generic’.lk or e-‘generic’.lk
4) What is the length for .LK domain name?
Minimum of 4 / maximum of 63 characters allowed. Domain name in purely numeric is not allowed.
5) What is the term of registration?
The term of registration is 1, 2, 5 or 10 year(s).
6) How do I perform a .LK domain registration?
Partners may register the domain name through Quickstart Wizard function. Partners may refer to “Doman Management” FAQ for more information.
Upon submission of registration application, registrant is require to submit a formal letter using the registrant’s company letter head with the information below to us in order to proceed for the registration:
- Name of the domain which is applying for;
- Name of the organization;
- Relevant registration number of the organization;
- Reason for choosing this domain name;
- Name and designation of the person to contact regarding this domain.
The letter must be duly signed by the company authorize personnel and consist of the company seal. You may download the sample letter here.
7) Can I delete a .LK domain after registered?
No, .LK domain is not allowed to be deleted upon successful of registration.
8) What is the term of renewal?
The term of renewal is 1, 2, 5 and 10 year(s).
9) What is the renewal grace period for .LK domain name and how do I perform a domain renewal?
Renewal grace period for .LK domain name is 90 days, partner may renew the domain name through Quickstart Wizard function. Partner may refer to “Domain Renewal” FAQ for more information.
10) Any Redemption Grace Period (RGP) for .LK domain name?
No, there is no RGP for .LK domain. Partner may refer to “Domain Restoration” FAQ for more information.
11) How long does it takes for a domain to release to public registration after expired and not renew?
After a .LK domain was expired, it will go through below life cycle:
90 days renewal grace period -> no redemption grace period -> no pending delete.
If partner did not renew the domain name, it will be released for public re-registration approximately 90 days from the domain expiration date. Please note that domain re-registration is based on first-come, first-serve basis.
12) Can I change the contact details or the DNS for the domain?
Registrant company name, first name and last name are unable to modify upon successful registration of a .LK domain. Meanwhile, you may change the contact details for the domain via the User Management function under the Domain Manager in your reseller panel.
Upon submission of a modification request for contact details or DNS, the registrant is require to submit an official request letter. The letter is must be using the registrant’s company letterhead, signed and chop by authorize personnel, and must be send to us at support@webnic.cc within 3 days from the modification date.
13) Can I initiate a registrar transfer for .LK domain name and how do I initiate the transfer?
No, due to registrar transfer function for .LK has yet launched. We will notify partners once this function is ready. Partner may refer to “Registrar Transfer” FAQ for more information.
14) Can I initiate a reseller transfer for .LK domain name and how do I initiate the transfer?
Yes, partners are allowed to initiate reseller transfer for .LK domain name. Please note that domain will be extended for 1 year after completion. Partner may refer to “Reseller Transfer” FAQ for more information.
15) How do I manage my .LK domain name, for example, name protection, retrieve authorization information and etc.?
Partners may manage domain name through User Management function. Partner may refer to “Domain Management” FAQ for more information.
16) Does WebNIC provide Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) for .LK?
Yes, WebNIC does provide IDN.lk in Tamil and Sinhala language.
